As is well known, 2024 is an election year around the world. There are elections in numerous countries, including Russia, India, and Turkey. More than half of the world’s population is going to the polls. There are concerns about the rise of authoritarian regimes all over the world.
The focus of everyone is undoubtedly on the U.S. elections. A significant milestone for the U.S. elections was passed yesterday. Trump outperformed expectations in the primaries held simultaneously in 15 states, known as ‘Super Tuesday’. Donald Trump gained the upper hand against his rival Nikki Haley in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
Frankly, after yesterday’s results, it seems just a matter of time before Nikki Haley throws in the towel. From this point on, the primaries are considered a formality for Trump.
The primaries, which started in Iowa on January 15, will end on June 8. The Republican party’s final candidate will be announced at the party congress in Milwaukee from July 15-18. Then, Biden and Trump will face off once again. The already deeply divided American society will become even more polarized. This is because Trump’s social media posts and speeches have the potential to do so.
For instance, in his victory speech yesterday, he implied that the U.S. is under an unprecedented invasion by referring to immigrants and said he would ‘take back the country’. As the election approaches, it is almost certain that Trump will raise the tension. The Democrats were hoping that Trump would be stopped by judicial means, but the Supreme Court eliminated this possibility on Monday.
However, there are still four separate cases ongoing against Trump, and a conviction in these cases could affect the voters’ preference. However, these cases might not conclude before the election. At least, Trump’s legal team is making significant efforts to prolong the trials.
Biden is 81, Trump is 77!
Trump emerges very strong from the primaries. Biden’s nomination is certain for the Democrats as well. However, whether Democrat or Republican, the American electorate is quite worried. This is because both presidential candidates are very old, and there are serious doubts about their mental faculties. Indeed, according to a poll released on Monday, six out of ten Americans do not believe Biden and Trump are mentally fit to serve as president. In other words, a large portion of the public, regardless of party affiliation, doubts the mental abilities of the presidential candidates.
This is a perfectly valid concern. After all, President Biden is 81, and Donald Trump is 77 years old. Biden’s gaffes and forgetfulness are a source of serious concern even among Democratic Party voters. Whichever candidate is elected, ‘senility’ discussions will frequently occur after the election.
Meanwhile, a first in U.S. history could happen.
This is because the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution allows for the removal of the president from office by his own cabinet if he becomes unable to perform his duties due to health or other reasons.
