Our planet has entered the new year like a ship with a broken compass:
its crew exhausted, its captains at war with one another, and the sea growing rougher by the day.
From Europe to the Pacific, from the Middle East to South Asia, from Africa to Latin America, the world is boiling.
The idea of a global war is no longer abstract โ it unsettles everyone.
At the same time, the unipolar world order, which dominated not only economically, politically, and militarily but also culturally, is visibly cracking. What will replace it remains unclear.
In this article, I will focus on the question of justice in the current world order, on the social and intellectual crises modern societies are experiencing, and on what may shape the solutions in the emerging global system.
The Cracks in the American Model
Through television series, music, media language, and education, American hegemony shaped the world into a single mold:
presenting itself as the norm, and everyone else as backward, deficient, and in need of โmodernization.โ
It defined success almost exclusively in terms of money and career, while claiming to stand at the center of equality, justice, and freedom.
Today, that hegemony is faltering.
Over the past few years, the open double standards practiced by massive international institutions โ institutions that once promised justice regardless of religion, language, race, or skin color โ have shattered global faith in concepts like human rights and democracy.
These institutions now appear to operate properly only when the rights of certain groups are involved, while becoming tools of delay and manipulation whenever the systemโs interests are threatened.
The so-called โsuperpower,โ once eager to โexport democracyโ mainly to regions rich in underground resources, no longer even bothers with diplomatic ornamentation. Its intentions have become visible to everyone โ including its own citizens.
A Civilization of Exhaustion
The global system, built to protect capital through taxation, banking, interest, and financial structures, relentlessly strengthens the powerful and enriches the wealthy.
The result is not only economic inequality in poorer regions like Africa, but even in the developed world:
millions of angry people who know that even if they spend their entire lives working, they may never own a home โ or achieve any meaningful stability.
Beyond economic and legal crises, another deeply destructive export of Western culture has been its pleasure-and-consumption-centered lifestyle.
Modern ideology promised that unlimited freedom would bring infinite happiness.
Instead, it produced societies increasingly consumed by addiction โ to sex, alcohol, and drugs.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, nearly 100,000 Americans die each year from drug overdoses.
Meanwhile, Western media obsessively frames โIslamic terrorismโ as the greatest threat to civilization, even though โ excluding September 11 โ the number of people killed by such attacks in Western countries barely exceeds 500.
Even when including 9/11, the figure reaches only about 3,500.
The contrast speaks for itself.
Alongside addiction, family life has weakened, meaning has eroded, and concepts like sacrifice and unconditional goodness have begun to disappear.
Loneliness and psychological distress now define entire generations.
Is There an Alternative?
If American hegemony collapses, is there any civilization ready to take its place?
China may dominate trade and production, but its cultural and ideological appeal remains limited.
India and Russia also lack the social and moral infrastructure to offer a convincing global vision.
In this growing vacuum, something unexpected has begun to happen.
Islamic thought is emerging โ not as a new cultural empire, but as a serious alternative for individuals exhausted by capitalism, pleasure culture, and spiritual emptiness.
Islamโs disciplined approach to life, its emphasis on responsibility, family, community, moderation in joy and sorrow, and its understanding of human worth โ grounded not in wealth or status but in oneโs relationship with the Creator โ speaks directly to people drowning in feelings of worthlessness.
The modern question โWhy did this happen to me?โ
is transformed in Islamic teaching into:
โWhat is this trial meant to complete within me?โ
This shift moves the individual from complaint to transformation, from despair to moral growth.
A New Moral Vocabulary
Another key reason Islamic thought is gaining credibility is the growing visibility of educated, second- and third-generation Muslims in the West.
Their lived faith stands in stark contrast to the caricature of Islam promoted by political propaganda.
Islam, when embraced as a moral and spiritual philosophy โ rooted in mercy, wisdom, balance, and ethical discipline โ reveals itself not as a relic of underdeveloped societies, but as a coherent worldview suited for modern life.
It offers individuals who are not merely self-centered and isolated, but responsible toward society, nature, and all living beings โ viewed as trusts from the Creator.
It encourages moderation, rejects waste, and fosters healthier relationships with the environment and with one another.
Beyond Modernity
Modernity gave humanity science, technology, and comfort.
But it also produced deep structural crises: loss of meaning, moral confusion, isolation, and ecological imbalance.
In this context, Islamic thought should not be seen as a rejection of modernity, but as a powerful framework for re-humanizing life.
Conclusion
We are witnessing an extraordinary transformation โ social, cultural, spiritual โ unfolding faster than most people realize, including many Muslims themselves.
In a world where even the richest cannot escape inner emptiness, any ideology claiming that all solutions are material is doomed to fail.
And when examined beyond propaganda and prejudice, the one intellectual tradition offering coherent, comprehensive responses to modern crises is unmistakably clear:
Islam.
May this dark chapter of history be nothing more than the labor pains of a more beautiful world.
