Though once respected for many years, he was later exiled from the land he tried to uplift, forced to leave this life as an “outsider,” a distant soul like so many others before him.

Tragically, however, many become lonely stars in the heavens, exiled to distant orbits, away from the people they strive to enlighten.
One can’t help but wonder what compels society to turn its back on those who labor for its universal wealth. Nearly all prophets, as well as an innumerable list of religious scholars (including the four imams of Islamic jurisprudence: Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abu Hanifa, Malik ibn Anas, and Al-Shafi‘i; from Rumi to Said Nursi, and from Shams to Khalid al-Baghdadi) and, in addition, Western thinkers and philosophers like Plato, Galileo, Hypatia, and Nietzsche, have been misunderstood, demonized, and entrapped by political schemes. Their vision and grasp of reality, far surpassing those around them, became uncomfortable, even dangerous, to a society more content with its settled certainties than with the unsettling truths they revealed. So, what is scholarship and wisdom, if not the art of seeing what is discomforting?
The essential question is: if a philosopher is not a mirror reflecting our ignorance, compelling us to rise above it, then what is?
Like the ancient Greek sages or the slain thinkers of the Enlightenment, Fethullah Gülen bore witness to the madness of his era and refused to look away. He was a man of faith and conviction who saw, with rare clarity, the pitfalls his society was stumbling into. His life and works aimed not only to diagnose his culture’s ailments but to build a language of understanding that would elevate it onto the world stage as a beacon, a point of reference. Yet, his outstretched hand was met with a slap, and the voice that spoke the truth was silenced.

All great minds in history have faced similar fates in their lives, and Gülen was no exception; rather than being canonized by those who could benefit, he was condemned.
History echoes with the distant voices of great minds exiled by their peers—the Promethean figures whose sacrifices ultimately illuminate humanity. Socrates, who chose death over compromising his principles; Galileo, persecuted for truths his society refused to hear; Spinoza, cast aside for questioning the foundations of belief, and so on. Each experienced rejection and suffering, yet their brilliance endured through the centuries. Gülen now joins this rare and solitary circle.
It will undoubtedly be understood someday, as it is already being recognized by the world beyond his society’s nauseating politics and insurmountable prejudices, that he has walked his path. What will this country’s unfortunate political straying matter in the face of the sorrow of his lonely death? He walked to the horizon of his soul as a man who wished only to reconcile his people with themselves, with the truth, and with the world.
Friends and foes alike must acknowledge: his vision—and the force that compelled him to uplift his society—met with betrayal, perhaps a fate only another philosopher could truly understand.
Misunderstanding, ostracizing, and ultimately alienating those who pursue high truths have always been the universal themes for all who walk this path. Has it not always been so? Those who seek the highest truths rarely fit into the frames permitted by history.
Let me emphasize that such a figure does not choose this fate for praise or approval. Rather, it is a spiritual compulsion, driven by a higher “historical truth/law” that propels him forward, even through humiliation, hatred, demonization, and ridicule. Every sage has a guiding star, an inner beacon oblivious to the world’s view and rage. This was the case for Gülen, who will continue to shine in the hearts and minds of those who follow his light. He was a lone star in the heavens, leading down a path that few dare to follow, accompanied only by sincerity and the truth he preserved with indomitable patience.
Yes, so be it. The path may be lonely, but was that not inevitable, proof of his strength, vision, and unwavering commitment to wisdom? These shapers of minds who transcend society are like stars that have adorned the night sky since ancient times—a point of light burning across endless distances and indifferent voids, a light that remains long after the source fades. As I emphasized in a previous piece, Gülen, too, will continue to live on in his ideas and ideals as long as the world turns.
Perhaps, this knowledge will comfort his mourning followers somewhat. Certainly, politicians come and go, societies evolve, and although it may not happen immediately, they transform. But Gülen’s thought, his ideals, and his vision will endure, resonating, demonstrating that such heights remain possible even when the world turns its back.
Ultimately, it will not be the hatred and condemnation he endured that will be remembered, but the impact of his thoughts, his courage, and his unfiltered intellectual bravery. In the end, Fethullah Gülen’s story will join those of the stars honored by history. Friends and foes alike should understand that his victory transcends the limits of the body, securing a place in the annals of time. It is well-known that no prejudice will extinguish this flame, which will remain the unique and inextinguishable fire of this age.
