I can’t help but think about how the lives of my colleagues in the heart of the conflict between Palestine and Israel have changed. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), following Israel’s ground operation in Gaza, at least 100 journalists lost their lives in approximately 200 days. As of April 20, 16 journalists were injured, four went missing, and 25 were arrested. This means that, since the beginning of the war on October 7, on average, one journalist lost their life every two days.
These distressing statistics once again highlight the devastating impact of the war. Each journalist bravely risks their life to bring the harsh realities of the war to the world. However, this should not be an excuse for endangering their lives. In the face of the horrors of war, protecting press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists becomes more important than ever.
War reporting is a courageous and challenging profession. For reporters in Gaza, this entails even more pain. The agony of losing loved ones, the shedding of blood, mental exhaustion, and living in fear are inevitable. Especially considering the limited humanitarian aid, accessing news in a war zone, learning the truth, conveying the current situation of the war, and meeting basic daily needs are difficult tasks. Journalists working in Gaza not only report the news but also find themselves among civilians experiencing the humanitarian crisis firsthand.
The difficulties faced by journalists in Gaza were once again highlighted by a tragic event on December 15. Al-Jazeera cameraman Samir Abudaka lost his life in an Israeli drone attack during the bombardment in Khan Yunis. Abudaka’s death is one of the most striking and painful examples of the situation journalists in Gaza find themselves in. Following the attack, Abudaka bled to death as the Israeli army prevented ambulances and rescue teams from intervening in time.
The challenges faced by journalists in the Gaza Strip are summarized by my Palestinian colleague Youmna Elsid’s words: “I made it through another day!” Elsid’s statement illustrates the courage and determination of journalists working in conflict zones despite the dangers they face every day. While struggling with the difficulties they encounter daily, journalists never give up on their mission to convey the truth to the world.
Unlike other war zones, journalists in Gaza not only work in a risky area while reporting the war but also face a series of challenges such as communication interruptions, trauma left by the war, hunger, and constant threats to their families. Palestinian journalists repeatedly emphasize the vulnerability of media workers in Gaza and often draw attention to the fact that they are targeted along with their families.
Under the pressure of security concerns and basic needs, some journalists have had to remove their press vests. The innocence of killed babies, the brutality of bodies pulled from the rubble of bombed hospital buildings, and the heartbreaking scenes of destroyed homes continue to compel journalists to carry on the legacy of their fallen colleagues. The grieving mothers’ heart-wrenching cries, the desperate pleas of those trapped under the rubble, and the agonizing cries of children losing limbs without anesthesia are witnessed by a handful of our colleagues who report these tragic events to the world. These events, though they occur within a single day, turn into painful memories that are impossible to erase from people’s minds. The impact of these events deeply and permanently affects their mental well-being.
Journalists who have embedded themselves in the world’s hearts seem to be remembered only on World Press Freedom Day on May 3, but their stories silently shake everyone’s core throughout the year. Through their dedicated efforts to tell heartbreaking stories and reveal the truth, our colleagues have sparked massive pro-Palestinian protests worldwide. These stories, written with tears, penetrate into the depths of society and sow the seeds of change.
The dreams of Palestinian journalists are not about working in fancy offices in high-rise buildings. They are the unsung heroes striving to bring hidden stories to light. Whether through documentary-style reporting or bold news coverage, each of them is a brave heart using their pen to uncover the truth.
Their mission reflects the pain and joys of people, exposing the true face of war and oppression to the world. They risk their lives every day to make silent cries and unseen pains visible. But these risks only strengthen their resolve.
Each of them has set out to bring hidden truths to light behind their cameras on the battlefield. Because they are not just practicing a profession; they are writing stories of heroism for humanity. Each one of them is my hero. While we remember them only through social media tag campaigns in a single day, they were stepping into the battlefield to confront the truth every day.
