When U.S. President Donald Trump won the elections and formed a cabinet consisting of highly radical figures, we were saying, “Forget the USA as you know it, not just the government but the regime is changing.” But no one expected this much — not even close.
So much so that after the historic tension in the Oval Office, even the experienced White House correspondents of the American media who rushed to live broadcast had to repeatedly emphasize that no one had ever seen or heard of such an event before.
EVERYONE WATCHED IN SHOCK
Before analyzing the argument, it’s helpful to give a brief summary. Because this incident will be discussed for years, will occupy a large place in history books, and will serve as a reference point when talking about radical changes in international politics — “After the fight at the White House…”
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House to sign a precious metals agreement. The meeting was already expected to be tense. Trump had previously accused Zelensky of being a “dictator” and even of “corruption.” Trump welcomed the visiting head of state at the White House door, saying, “He’s fully dressed up for today!”
The tension was palpable — but the real explosion happened inside. The two leaders faced the cameras and began sparring. When Zelensky complained that U.S. administrations, including pre-Trump presidents, had failed to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vice President JD Vance responded:
“Mr. President, I think coming to the Oval Office to try to raise this issue in front of the American media is disrespectful.”
Trump described Zelensky’s remarks as “disrespectful to America” and openly insulted the Ukrainian leader. He went on to say:
“You are gambling with World War III!”
After the heated exchange, which at times turned into shouting, Zelensky was kicked out of the White House, and the precious metals agreement was not signed.
As the world watched the events unfold with bated breath, Trump took to social media, saying Zelensky was not ready for peace:
“I understand that as long as the U.S. is involved, President Zelensky will not be ready for peace. Our involvement gives him an advantage at the negotiating table. I don’t want an advantage — I want PEACE. He disrespected the U.S. in the Oval Office. When he is ready for peace, he can return.”
When asked if he owed Trump an apology for the tension, Zelensky said:
“I respect President Trump and the American people. I believe we need to be very clear and honest, and I am not sure we did anything wrong.”
TRAP OR INEXPERIENCE?
After the historic showdown at the White House, two questions came to the forefront:
- Why did such tension happen?
- Was this a trap or mere inexperience?
As expected, everyone interpreted the situation based on their political stance. Trump’s opponents condemned the public humiliation of a wartime leader. Zelensky’s critics argued that the Ukrainian leader was inexperienced, trying to lecture Trump in his own house — a historic mistake.
Honestly, there’s no single truth — everyone saw what happened. Zelensky mismanaged the process. If you’re at war — especially one financed with another country’s weapons and money — you need to act differently, without compromising your nation’s dignity.
Most importantly, you must know your opponent. Standing up to an ego-driven leader like Trump — especially in his own house — is dangerous.
Another crucial point — though technical — was Zelensky’s decision to speak in English instead of using an interpreter. His command of English is limited, and diplomacy is a game of words. If Zelensky had used an interpreter, some of the heated exchanges might have been avoided.
He should have also foreseen the “good cop-bad cop” routine between JD Vance and Trump. The vice president played the bad cop, rattling Zelensky, who came in already defensive due to Trump’s earlier “dictator” accusations.
By the end of the day, Zelensky left Washington having failed to secure two critical objectives:
- Locking in the flow of military and financial aid to Ukraine
- Laying the groundwork for a permanent, reliable peace
Instead, he likely lost the U.S. support he once had.
Trump, for his part, was expected to show more tolerance toward a leader fighting for his country’s freedom.
CELEBRATION IN MOSCOW
While the world watched the White House scandal, it’s easy to imagine the joy in Moscow. Even if Putin himself had been in the Oval Office, the outcome couldn’t have been better for Russia.
The Kremlin issued a series of satisfied statements. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, described the humiliation of Zelensky as:
“The Kyiv pig got the slap it deserved in the Oval Office.”
Meanwhile, the American media’s heavyweights accused Trump and his team of being pro-Russian. With the events of the past day, the likelihood of the war turning in Russia’s favor has significantly increased.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
First of all, things will get much harder for Zelensky. He has almost entirely lost U.S. support. With the war still ongoing, early elections or even resignation may become realistic options.
On the American side, Trump’s supporters and the MAGA movement will ramp up nationalist rhetoric. What Trump might call Zelensky next is anyone’s guess.
Europe, however, is on high alert. EU leaders will hold an emergency meeting in London on March 2 to discuss the situation.
Donald Tusk declared:
“Ukraine is not alone.”
French President Emmanuel Macron added:
“Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine is the victim.”
The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said:
“Ukraine is Europe! We stand by Ukraine and will accelerate our support so they can continue fighting the aggressor. Today, it is clear that the free world needs new leadership. It falls to us Europeans to take up this challenge.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen directly addressed Zelensky:
“Your honor reflects the courage of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone. We will continue to work with you for a just and lasting peace.”
The scandal at the White House will inevitably push European leaders to seriously consider building an independent European army and charting a course without the U.S.
Many European commentators believe that Trump’s disdain wasn’t only directed at Zelensky — it was aimed at Europe itself.
UNCHARTED WATERS
It’s hard to predict how the war in Ukraine will evolve after the EU’s London summit.
However, one thing is certain:
With Trump at the helm, the U.S. is heading into uncharted waters.
The traditional U.S. foreign policy established since World War I has come to an end. Trump is openly pursuing a pro-Russian policy, and no one knows what he will do next.
