Stand for Justice—Demand the Release of Mustafa Goktepe

We call on the Brazilian authorities and the international community to uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of law in the case of Mustafa Goktepe, a Turkish-Brazilian dual national, civic leader, and entrepreneur who has been unjustly detained in São Paulo at the request of the Turkish government.

Göktepe, a naturalized Brazilian citizen, has lived peacefully in Brazil for over 20 years. He is the father of two Brazilian-born daughters, husband to a Brazilian citizen, and a respected member of the Turkish-Brazilian community. As president of the Institute for Intercultural Dialogue, he has dedicated his life to promoting religious tolerance and intercultural understanding in Brazil.

His arrest stems from an extradition request by the Turkish government, which continues to misuse international legal mechanisms in a global campaign of political repression targeting members of the Gülen movement—a peaceful civil society network that has been arbitrarily labeled as “terrorist” by the Erdoğan regime.

We remind the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court and the Brazilian public that:

• No other democratic nation recognizes the Gülen movement as a terrorist organization.
• The previous two extradition requests made by Turkey against individuals in Brazil were unanimously denied by the court, citing political motivation and lack of legal merit.
• Göktepe’s arrest contradicts Brazil’s constitutional protections for its citizens, its commitment to international human rights, and its tradition of standing against authoritarian overreach.

We urge:

1. Immediate revocation of Mustafa Göktepe’s detention and respect for his rights as a Brazilian citizen.
2. The Brazilian Supreme Court to reject the extradition request in line with precedent and principles of justice.
3. International human rights organizations, democratic governments, and civil society to speak out against Turkey’s abuse of international legal systems to pursue political dissidents abroad.

Transnational repression must not be tolerated. We must not allow authoritarian regimes to export fear and silence across borders.
