Ankara – February 5, 2025 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asserted that women have “gained freedom” under his leadership while taking aim at the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), accusing it of being influenced by “marginal leftist organizations.”
Erdogan made the remarks at the 7th Ordinary Congress of the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) Women’s Branch, held at Ankara Sports Hall, where he underscored his long-term political vision.
“We are not short-distance runners,” Erdogan told supporters. “We are in a long and exhausting marathon. None of us can afford to break, resent, or take offense on the path of serving the nation. We will continue to stay away from selfishness and arrogance, always saying ‘we,’ not ‘I.’”

Erdogan also addressed the recent visit of Abu Mohammad al-Julani, leader of the jihadist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) administration in Syria, as well as a high-profile meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Shara.
“Turkey has begun to establish itself as a key player in its region through strategic moves, just like a master chess player in foreign policy,” Erdogan said. “We have started to shape our country according to our vision.”
He confirmed discussions with Shara, calling the visit “very critical” and stating that both nations had reached “major decisions that will shape our future.”
While Erdogan did not elaborate on the specifics of the agreements, his comments suggest a shift in Turkey’s approach to its southern neighbor amid ongoing regional tensions.
