Erdogan Signs; Swedish NATO Accession Protocol in the Turkish Parliament

The Swedish NATO Accession Protocol has been officially signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and has been submitted to the Turkish Parliament.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has formally signed the Swedish NATO Accession Protocol. Following the signing of the protocol, it was sent to the Turkish Parliament. The Parliament’s leadership will first refer the protocol to the Foreign Affairs Committee. After committee approval, the text will be presented to the Turkish Parliament for a vote. Once approved by the Parliament, the legislative process will be complete.

After delivering the document confirming Sweden’s NATO membership to the custodian of the 1949 North Atlantic Treaty, the United States, in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd member.

Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership last year in reaction to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and the majority of alliance members swiftly granted their approval. However, citing concerns related to counterterrorism, the Turkish Parliament had not approved Sweden’s NATO membership until now.
