ANKARA—Turkish President and ruling AK Party (AKP) leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a fiery speech Wednesday at his party’s Expanded Provincial Chairpersons Meeting, issuing a direct warning to main opposition leader Özgür Özel.
“Mr. Özel, I am addressing you as the commander-in-chief—watch your step. If you don’t, we will make sure you do,” Erdoğan said, escalating tensions between the government and the opposition.

- Erdoğan challenged Özel to address corruption allegations within his party instead of criticizing the AKP. “Let him explain the money towers, the concerts, and the fraud in municipalities,” he said. “Mr. Özel talks a lot, but he talks nonsense.”

The confrontation stems from recent allegations by Özgür Özel, who accused Turkey’s Land Forces and Naval Forces commanders of pressuring for the dismissal of junior officers and the forced retirement of Lieutenant General Tevfik Algan.
Özel had previously criticized Turkey’s former defense minister Hulusi Akar, making a pointed remark: “You are men who have received not prayers but curses from your comrades. I am taking note to hold you accountable when the time comes.”
