In a striking and deeply controversial moment during a recent party speech, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made remarks that many interpret as a thinly veiled threat against his political rivals. Commenting on the ambitions of opposition figures for the presidency, Erdoğan stated: “Let’s see how many more CHP members will be sacrificed on their path to the presidency.”
The comment has drawn fierce backlash, particularly from Ekrem İmamoğlu, the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul and the main opposition’s presidential candidate. In a powerful statement shared on social media from behind bars, İmamoğlu described Erdoğan’s words as a “terrifying confession.” He accused the president of openly threatening not only him but also the millions of voters who support him.
“You’ve finally said it out loud.”
“Finally, you’ve taken the mask off,” İmamoğlu’s post began. “You’ve openly threatened to ‘sacrifice’ a presidential candidate—me. But it’s not just me you’re threatening. It’s the entire nation, the millions who stand for democracy, justice, and change.”
İmamoğlu’s message painted Erdoğan’s remarks as an admission that he is willing to use any means necessary to eliminate rivals: from canceling elections and jailing opponents, to annulling university diplomas and targeting political families.
“Ask yourselves,” he challenged Erdoğan, “what more do you have in that bag of tricks? What’s left that you haven’t already tried?”
A Pattern of Suppression
For years, critics and international watchdogs have accused Erdoğan of systematically undermining Turkey’s democratic institutions. Under his leadership:
- Elections have been overturned or manipulated.
- Opposition politicians and mayors have been jailed.
- The judiciary has been stacked with loyalists.
- Independent media outlets have been shuttered or taken over.
- The rule of law has been severely weakened.
İmamoğlu’s arrest is the latest in a long line of opposition figures who have faced legal persecution. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the previous CHP presidential candidate, was also repeatedly targeted with legal threats and disinformation campaigns.
What Is Being “Sacrificed”?
“It’s not the politicians who are being sacrificed,” İmamoğlu said. “It’s the economy, jobs, justice, and the very soul of democracy in Turkey.” He added that hope has been lost not only by opposition voters but by long-time AKP supporters who once believed in Erdoğan’s promises of reform and prosperity.
The post concluded with a message of resilience:
“With the permission of God and the support of the people, we will neither be sacrificed, nor sacrifice anyone. We will save this country from this destructive mindset.”
An Alarming Precedent
Erdoğan’s language has sparked alarm among observers who see it as further proof that dissent is being criminalized and the political playing field dangerously skewed. Rather than mere rhetoric, such statements often precede targeted political action in Turkey’s increasingly authoritarian climate.
As the 2028 elections loom, the question remains: How far will Erdoğan go to stay in power—and how many more will be ‘sacrificed’ in the process?
Would you like this turned into a shorter op-ed or social media post?
