On October 20, 2024, Fethullah Gülen, the Turkish Islamic scholar and spiritual leader, passed away at the age of 83. His passing marks the end of an era for the global Hizmet (Service) movement, which he inspired through his emphasis on service to humanity, interfaith dialogue, and the promotion of educational institutions worldwide.
Gülen’s influence extended globally, with schools and cultural centers affiliated with the movement operating in numerous countries. His movement, however, became a target of the Turkish government, particularly after the failed coup attempt in 2016, which the Turkish authorities blamed on Gülen and his followers, despite his repeated denials. In the years that followed, many associated with the movement faced persecution, with thousands imprisoned or forced into exile.
Following Gülen’s passing, tributes have poured in from supporters around the world. Among them, U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson extended his condolences to NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom, one of Gülen’s prominent supporters and an outspoken critic of the Turkish regime. In his heartfelt message to Freedom, Johnson expressed his sorrow, writing:
