The world’s largest island, Greenland, a territory of Denmark, has recently become a major focus of international attention. Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States, declared his intention to purchase Greenland even before taking office. His plans included integrating Greenland into the U.S. either economically or militarily. These statements turned global attention toward Greenland.
However, the approximately 57,000 residents of Greenland are currently experiencing excitement of a different kind. Greenland, which has been unable to join UEFA due to its status, is now on the brink of joining the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). If membership becomes official, Greenland’s national team will be able to participate in official matches, with opportunities to compete in the World Cup and the Gold Cup.
Though part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland operates its own autonomous football federation, the Greenland Football Association (KAK – Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat), founded on July 4, 1971. The federation oversees 76 clubs and approximately 5,500 licensed players. Due to local conditions, futsal has overtaken traditional football in popularity.
Since FIFA does not recognize Greenland, it cannot participate in official or friendly matches with other FIFA members. It plays unofficial matches against other unrecognized teams. From 1999 to 2002, former Denmark national team coach Sepp Piontek managed Greenland’s national team without receiving any compensation.
A match against Tibet during Sepp Piontek’s tenure has gone down in history. On June 30, 2001, Greenland faced Tibet in Vanløse, Copenhagen. The match attracted significant attention due to pressure from China, yet it was played despite these challenges, drawing numerous journalists.
Greenland played its first match against the Faroe Islands, another part of the Kingdom of Denmark, on June 2, 1980, in Iceland, losing 6–0. On July 1, 2003, Greenland achieved its biggest victory by defeating Sark 16–0.
Now to the CONCACAF excitement…
In May 2024, Greenland formally applied for CONCACAF membership, citing its inability to join UEFA as the reason for this move. Just before Christmas, the awaited response arrived. Greenland has been officially invited to attend the CONCACAF meeting on February 27 in Miami. Morten Rutkjaer, Greenland’s head coach since 2019, is among those delighted by this development.
Rutkjaer remarked, “The people of Greenland have dreamed of being part of a football community for 30–40 years, so we’re extremely proud to have been invited to meet with CONCACAF. We’ve worked hard over the past 4–5 years to lay a solid foundation, so this is a breakthrough for us.” He emphasized that official CONCACAF membership would greatly motivate players.
Greenland Football Association President Kenneth Kleist and head coach Morten Rutkjaer will attend the February 27 meeting, where they will present Greenland’s football project and clarify the steps following potential membership.
Rutkjaer is optimistic: “In the long term, I expect us to become the 42nd member of CONCACAF, and I’ve never been this positive. Based on our communications so far, it looks very promising.”
If Greenland succeeds in joining CONCACAF, it will gain the ability to play official international matches, participate in World Cup qualifiers, and compete in the Gold Cup, the equivalent of the European Championship. Additionally, Greenland’s football federation would benefit from improved funding.
Let’s conclude with the Greenlandic League. Made up of amateur teams and players, the league features 40 teams. Since its inception in 1954, B-67 has won the league 13 times, while N-48 has 11 titles to its name.
