Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu has issued a bold challenge to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on social media, calling for immediate elections. In response to Erdoğan’s recent post on X (formerly Twitter), İmamoğlu quoted the president’s remarks and countered with a strong statement:
“The most effective cure for our nation is the ballot box. Our country urgently needs an election. The people are great! BRING IT ON, ELECTIONS NOW!”
Erdoğan, in his speech earlier today, had criticized opposition figures, stating: “The most effective remedy for those dreaming of power, fueled by social media hype and orchestrated cheers, is the ballot box.”
Parliament Speaker Responds to Early Election Calls
Meanwhile, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Numan Kurtulmuş responded to opposition leader Özgür Özel’s calls for an early election. Speaking at a breakfast meeting with journalists, Kurtulmuş dismissed the idea, stating, “There are no conditions for an early election.” He argued that election debates are currently off the agenda, asserting that the government remains focused on its political priorities.
Bolu Kartalkaya Fire Tragedy: 78 Lives Lost
During the meeting, Kurtulmuş also addressed the devastating fire at a hotel in Bolu Kartalkaya, which claimed 78 lives. He denied any legal or regulatory shortcomings, stating, “I do not believe the fire was due to a lack of regulations or legal gaps. The fundamental issue in Turkey is the failure to comply with existing regulations. I hope this serves as a major lesson. If not, then what will?”
“The Streets Are Not the Solution”
Additionally, Kurtulmuş criticized recent public demonstrations, warning against street protests. “I find calls for demonstrations inappropriate. In a democracy, the place to challenge judicial decisions is within the judiciary itself. The solution is not in the streets.”
As political tensions rise, İmamoğlu’s direct challenge to Erdoğan signals a heated debate over the possibility of early elections, while government officials continue to downplay any immediate prospects for a vote.
