According to data from the Turkish General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, there are 23,978 university graduates in Turkish prisons, including 298 with doctorates, 1,913 with master’s degrees, and 21,767 with higher school and undergraduate degrees.
The Turkish General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses published data for August 2023. According to the data, there are 2,157 children under the age of 18 in Turkish prisons for various crimes. Of these, 83 are girls. Of the 651 children serving sentences in Turkish prisons, 627 are boys and 24 are girls, while 1,506 are detained, 59 of whom are girls. Of the children in Turkish prisons, 220 are in open punishment execution institutions and 1,937 are in closed ones.
According to ANKA, the number of inmates over the age of 65 in Turkish prisons is 4,374. Women constitute 3,166 of these. Among those over 65 in Turkish prisons, 3,935 are serving sentences and 439 are detained. The most crowded age group in Turkish prisons is the 18-40 range, with 173,044 inmates. This is followed by the 40-65 age range with 91,032 inmates.
Additionally, out of 270,607 inmates in Turkish prisons, 38,391 are detained. 56,826 of the inmates are staying in open punishment execution institutions.

When the distribution of inmates by education level is made, it is seen that 298 have doctorates, 1,913 have master’s degrees, and 21,767 are high school and undergraduate graduates. There are most primary school graduates in Turkish prisons. They are followed by 66,446 primary school graduates, 51,170 elementary school graduates, 49,796 high school or equivalent school graduates, and 49,028 middle school or equivalent school graduates.
Of those in Turkish prisons, 10,328 are illiterate, while 7,351 can read and write but have not completed any schooling.
