On the morning of October 3, multiple sources reported that Israel carried out an airstrike targeting a weapons warehouse at Russia’s Khmeimim Airbase near Latakia, Syria. The attack, reportedly prompted by suspicions of weapons smuggling by Iran, has led to conflicting accounts across media platforms. Syrian state TV claimed that the airstrike was aimed at a warehouse on the Russian base, following the landing of an Iranian cargo plane associated with Qeshm Fars Airlines. This aircraft arrived under the guise of delivering “humanitarian aid” but raised suspicions of transporting military equipment.
Abdullah Almousa, on his X account, stated that the second Iranian plane landed without official notice and was linked to the strike. It reportedly shut off its navigation systems before landing, adding to Israeli concerns of weapon transfers intended for Hezbollah in Lebanon. Sham FM, a Syrian pro-government radio station, confirmed that Syrian air defenses engaged targets over Latakia following the attack, while social media footage showed the aftermath of the strike on suspected arms depots.
Israel’s military is said to have fired 30 missiles from naval warships during the pre-dawn assault, sparing runways and towers at the Latakia airfield but igniting fires that prompted Russian air patrols in the area. According to Russian media, Syrian air defenses, supported by Russian forces, intercepted over 50 shells.
In related developments, U.S. and Israeli officials are reportedly in talks about potential military responses to Iranian aggression, following missile strikes on Israeli territory. While Israel is poised to retaliate against Iran, it is coordinating its response with the U.S., targeting Iranian militias or strategic assets in the region.
The situation marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, with both Israel and the U.S. considering next steps in addressing Iranian military activities in Syria and beyond.
Russia’s response will likely aim to balance several goals: maintaining its strategic presence in Syria, avoiding direct military conflict with Israel, and preserving its alliance with Iran. Diplomatic efforts combined with military posturing, such as reinforcing Syrian air defenses, seem more probable than direct confrontation. However, should Israeli actions continue to threaten Russian interests in Syria, Moscow might adopt a harder stance, increasing the risk of broader regional escalation.
