Belgium-based human rights organization Solidarity with Others has released its latest report titled “Women’s Struggle for Adequate Medical Care in Prison.”
Ahead of March 8, International Women’s Day, Solidarity with Others highlighted that thousands of women are currently held in Turkish prisons, emphasizing that their medical care needs are largely neglected.
The report, “Women’s Struggle for Adequate Medical Care in Prison,” sheds light on the hardships faced by incarcerated women who are deprived of even the most basic medical care, illustrating these struggles through specific case examples.
Marking International Women’s Day, the organization called on Turkish authorities, stating:
“No woman should have to beg for medical assistance. No mother should be forced to give birth in a prison cell. No cancer patient should be left to suffer in silence.”
The report details the difficulties experienced by women, providing concrete cases. Despite the clear legal protections for pregnant women, the report condemned the arrest of a seven-months-pregnant woman and the ten-month wait for a biopsy endured by a woman diagnosed with breast cancer.
