Taylor Swift and the Politics of Pop: Decoding American Election Conspiracies

Let me say this upfront: this is a political, moreover, an election analysis article. Don’t look at the title and think I’ve become a ‘Swiftie’ caught up in the pop culture wind, planning to talk about Swift’s successes in a column.

As is well known, it’s an election year in the USA, and the Republican primaries are in full swing. Nikki Haley hasn’t dropped out yet, but it’s almost certain that Donald Trump will be the Republicans’ candidate against Biden.

From this point forward, it will be all about campaigns, promises, and mutual bickering. A fiercely competitive and quite tense race is certain. Both sides will undoubtedly put their best foot forward. The coming months will be a period when conspiracy theories peak.

But Americans love a good conspiracy… Americans adore conspiracy theories. From the most conservative to the most liberal, from the devout to the atheist, every segment has its variety of conspiracy theories. Frankly, when it comes to conspiracy theories, I expect anything from Americans, but the latest conspiracy theory is of the ‘no way’ kind.

Famous singer, songwriter, and TV star Taylor Swift and her boyfriend have become the main agenda of political discussions. I’ll get to the details of this discussion, but let’s put a comma here and open a parenthesis on Americans’ mind-boggling beliefs to better understand why the ‘Taylor Swift’ conspiracy has caught on so much.

There are countless books, documentaries, and films about Americans’ love for conspiracy theories. Moreover, there’s a huge economy behind conspiracy theories. For instance, Meta’s founder Mark Zuckerberg is having a $100 million bunker built on an island in Hawaii. The bunker has everything.

Zuckerberg is not alone in this. Reddit’s founder Steve Huffman, preparing for ‘future bad days,’ had laser surgery in 2015 to get rid of glasses and acquired a motorcycle. Yahoo’s former executive Marvin Liao has taken archery lessons as part of survival training in the wild in case ‘civilization collapses.’

Facebook executive Antonio Garcia Martinez has built a private bunker on his island in the Pacific Ocean. Businessman Larry Hall has transformed a silo in Kansas into a shelter for the rich to survive the apocalypse, with no space left for 75 ultra-wealthy individuals for 5 years!

According to Rising S and Vivos, providers of shelters for the wealthy, nearly 300 private bunkers have already been sold. The rich’s goods tire our jaws, but let me mention, each of these shelters was sold for $8 million.

There are countless such examples. Anyway, let’s get back to our topic.

To the mind-boggling theories of Americans – there are even devout Christians who believe Trump is the chosen one; we were used to that, but the latest theory really makes you say ‘no way.’ According to Trump supporters, Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce are part of a conspiracy to re-elect Biden. According to American conservatives, the Swift-Kelce romance is a Pentagon project.

If you’re unaware of the power and popularity of Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs, it might seem like a far-fetched theory. However, a single tweet from Swift is enough to mobilize American youth.

The Swift economy… Pop artist Taylor Swift is a true success story. Her albums break records upon records. There’s no end to the awards she’s won. She’s an economy unto herself. According to American experts, if Taylor Swift were an economy, she would be larger than the economies of 50 countries.

She has millions of fans from every section of America. Let me explain Swift’s political influence with an example; last September, Swift invited everyone to vote through her Instagram account with about 300 million followers. Shortly after, 35,000 new voter registrations came in. The number of 18-year-old voters saw a 115% increase.

Swift is already an idol, and every step she takes makes news. Moreover, she’s been in a relationship with Travis Kelce, a player for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, and now she’s constantly in the headlines. Just because Swift attended a Kansas City Chiefs game, ratings broke records.

Next week, there’s the Super Bowl, the most expensive and prestigious sporting event in the US, and one of the teams is the Kansas City Chiefs.

Americans have always been interested in strong and charismatic leaders. Their political history is full of such examples. There are even extreme examples like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan. That’s why Trump supporters are, to put it mildly, driven mad by the fact that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, who can mobilize millions of people with a single word, support Biden.

American conservatives claim that Swift and Kelce are key elements of a secret conspiracy to help President Biden get re-elected in 2024. Even the staunch Trump supporter Fox News has called on Swift to stay out of politics. Channels like the far-right OAN are full of these claims. Trump supporters argue that if Swift openly supports Biden, they will have a tough time.

Political analysts do not find this concern unfounded. Remembering that Swift supported Biden in the 2020 elections, she could be decisive in the November election.

In short, as Rafet El Roman’s song goes, it’s an ‘adventure-filled America’.

Tweets from a pop singer might determine the politician who will sit on the world’s most powerful seat.
