In Russia, the “VPN bans” that came into effect in 2024 are the latest link in Putin’s digital dictatorship project. The system, which redirects internet traffic to state-controlled servers, scrutinizes every data packet with KGB-like precision.
Opposition media sites are shut down, social media is flooded with “state-approved” content. And the Russian people? They are trapped in Putin’s “alternative reality” web: “Censorship doesn’t kill fake news; it kills the truth.”
ERDOĞAN’S DIGITAL EMPIRE
In Turkey, the silencing of Twitter during the 2013 Gezi Protests was the first step towards digital dictatorship. By 2024, the situation has become alarming: with the “Disinformation Law,” the government can ban any criticism as “fake news.”
Internet blackouts have become the norm; even accessing Wikipedia is a “national security” issue! Erdoğan’s regime has turned the digital sphere into a propaganda temple:
“While opposition voices are silenced, the government’s rhetoric is amplified by algorithms.”
A COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T EXIST IN THE WORLD
North Korea is the “utopian” example of digital dictatorship. Only 1% of the population has access to the internet, and even that is limited to state-approved content. The rest live within Kwangmyong, a local intranet where they watch the leader’s victories on repeat.
Here, it’s not just oppositional tweets that are forbidden—downloading a VPN is a crime punishable by death!
Kim’s regime proves that digital dictatorship not only physically imprisons its people but also mentally isolates them.
These regimes don’t just threaten their own citizens—they threaten the entire world. Russia’s cyberattacks on Europe, Turkey’s digital manipulation of the refugee crisis, China’s use of TikTok to shape global perceptions…
Digital dictatorship now knows no borders. Even in the West, far-right parties are adopting these authoritarian tactics: Macron’s “emergency” internet restrictions, the UK’s “online surveillance” laws…
Democracies are trampling freedoms under the guise of security.
THE PEN AGAINST DIGITAL WALLS
In digital dictatorships, journalists are branded as “enemies of the state.” In Russia, Navalny’s supporters are imprisoned as “extremists,” while in Turkey, reporters are jailed under “disinformation” charges.
But the truth is this: VPNs, encrypted messaging apps, the dark web… These tools have become the weapons of digital resistance. Hong Kong’s youth organizing on Telegram, Iranian women’s revolt spreading through TikTok…
The more dictators censor, the more creative the opposition becomes!
Digital dictatorship is a war against humanity. Putin, Erdoğan, Kim, and others are trying to rewrite history by controlling data flow.
But they must remember: Not even the Great Wall of China could stand against the digital age. The truth always finds a way.
