When Donald Trump won the election and returned to the White House, I said, “Forget the America you know—everything will be very different now!” But even I didn’t expect this much. Trump, who has already shaken the world with actions like tariff hikes, has made his biggest surprise move in the field of education. The Trump administration has instructed U.S. embassies to halt visa appointments for foreign students.
The decision covers F, M, and J visa types and directly affects over 1 million students enrolled in U.S. universities. The White House also announced that international student visa applicants would now be subjected to social media screenings.
In truth, no one expected the friction between President Trump and Harvard University to escalate this far. However, a recent development in the U.S. has shaken not just Harvard, but the entire academic world. The Trump administration abruptly revoked Harvard’s authority to admit international students. The stated justification was the university’s failure to provide federal authorities with protest records from the past five years and claims that the campus does not provide a safe environment—particularly for Jewish students.
However, academic circles see this decision as a political intervention and a serious threat to university autonomy. Because the issue isn’t just about Harvard.
The real question is: If they’re doing this to Harvard, who won’t they do it to?
Harvard is one of the wealthiest universities in the world. According to 2023 budget data, its annual operating budget is $6 billion, and its endowment fund stands at $50 billion. So far, Trump has frozen $2.2 billion in funds and approximately $100 million in contract payments to Harvard.
Harvard is strong enough to resist Trump. The university administration declared that “Harvard cannot be Harvard without international students.” But how many of the 2,600 universities across the U.S. can stand up to the Trump administration?
A $44 Billion Giant Economy
This decision, which shocked not only the U.S. but the entire world, has sparked intense debate. That’s because during the 2023–2024 academic year, 1.1 million international students studied in the U.S. Of those, 502,000 were enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs.
Last year, 298,705 new international students enrolled in U.S. universities for the first time. India sent the highest number of students (331,000), followed by China (277,000). Turkey ranked 20th, with 9,148 students.
According to official records (NAFTA), these students contributed $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy through tuition, housing, and living expenses. From this angle, one would expect Trump not to restrict international students but rather to work harder to attract more of them.
So why dismantle a system that not only brings enormous economic benefits but also draws the world’s brightest minds?
A New Form of Political Interference in Academia?
This incident reveals how vulnerable American universities can be to federal authority. As MIT President Sally Kornbluth put it, this is “a serious moment.”
For the first time, a U.S. president is using the student visa system as a tool to punish universities that displease him politically.
John Aubrey Douglass, an education policy expert at UC Berkeley, sums it up this way: “Harvard may be the current target, but this is an unprecedented attempt to erode the autonomy of all major universities in the U.S.”
Over the past 25 years, the number of international students in U.S. universities has doubled. At elite universities like Harvard, they make up more than 25% of the student body. These students not only bring financial resources but also enrich the cultural, scientific, and intellectual diversity of institutions. Yet this latest move sends a clear message to students from abroad: You’re no longer welcome.
As Abdullah Shahid Sial, a Pakistani student at Harvard, puts it: “They wanted to make us feel unwanted here. And they succeeded quite well.”
America Isn’t Just Losing Students
International students often stay in the U.S. after graduation, contributing to academia, technology, and the private sector. Globally, people educated in U.S. universities strengthen both the American economy and its soft diplomatic power. Now, these opportunities are being jeopardized for the sake of political games.
Experts say countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia are eagerly waiting to attract these students. Trump’s actions are delivering a heavy blow to the global appeal of U.S. education. The Trump administration justifies the visa restrictions by saying, “We want to know who’s coming into the country!”
The Perception That Foreign Students Are Replacing Americans
Some conservative groups supporting the decision claim that American students have fewer chances to get into schools like Harvard because the spots are being taken by “foreigners.” But this approach is a narrow-minded one that values nationality over academic merit.
According to Jay Greene of the Heritage Foundation, “International students were originally accepted to bring external perspectives to American education and to spread American values when they returned to their home countries. But now that the numbers have grown so much, that benefit has been replaced by a cultural threat.”
Such views are becoming part of an ideological pressure campaign to limit the global vision of universities. Even if the court’s ruling is temporarily enforced, the message is clear: Universities that resist will be punished.
This isn’t just about one university—it concerns the future of academic institutions around the world. Universities can only thrive when they are free. Political interference suffocates science and free thought. Today Harvard is the target. But no one knows who will be next.
That’s why this development should not be seen merely as an attack on one university—but rather as a systematic threat directed at thought, science, and freedom itself.
