In an unprecedented wave of digital censorship, social media platform X has blocked access to thousands of accounts belonging to Turkish journalists, activists, and media organizations. This latest act of repression, carried out at the request of an Ankara court, underscores the growing assault on free speech and independent journalism in Turkey. The censorship move coincides with mounting speculation that the Turkish government is preparing a major political maneuver—potentially concerning the Kurdish issue or the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Among those affected are exiled journalists Turhan Bozkurt, Abdullah Bozkurt, Emre Uslu, Ergun Babahan, Aydogan Vatandas, Basri DoÄŸan, and Erkam Tufan Aytav, Emine Erdoglu as well as the independent news outlet Bold News and Politurco. The crackdown has also silenced prominent activists such as lawyers Murat Akkoç and Gökhan GüneÅŸ, who provide legal aid to victims of Turkey’s post-2016 purge.
The censorship, justified by the court as necessary for “national security and public order,” aligns with the Turkish government’s broader campaign to silence dissent. Following the death of Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen last October, authorities escalated their crackdown, detaining individuals who expressed condolences and blocking access to critical accounts.
Beyond social media, YouTube channels run by exiled journalists and political dissidents have also been restricted or blocked entirely. These channels have played a crucial role in exposing government corruption, human rights violations, and political crackdowns. The suppression of these platforms further restricts independent reporting, leaving the public with fewer alternatives to state-controlled narratives.
Political analysts suggest that this censorship campaign may be a precursor to a significant government action. The Turkish government has a history of intensifying digital repression ahead of controversial moves, and many speculate that authorities might be preparing for a major escalation regarding the Kurdish issue or the potential arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Ä°mamoÄŸlu. By silencing critical voices now, the government can shape public perception and minimize opposition to upcoming actions.
Despite its claims of supporting free expression, X has a record of complying with Turkish government censorship demands. In the lead-up to the 2023 general election, the platform restricted access to hundreds of accounts critical of President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan. In 2014, Twitter was outright banned in Turkey for refusing to comply with government takedown orders.
This latest censorship drive highlights Turkey’s alarming decline in online freedoms. According to Freedom House’s “Freedom on the Net 2024” report, Turkey ranks as the least free country in Europe for digital rights, scoring just 31 out of 100. Authorities have repeatedly blocked access to major social media platforms, including Facebook, Wikipedia, and Instagram, often in response to political crises.
The international community must respond to Turkey’s escalating crackdown on digital freedoms. Human rights organizations, democratic governments, and tech companies must demand transparency from X and resist authoritarian censorship requests. Digital rights activists must continue amplifying the voices of those silenced to ensure that independent journalism and activism remain resilient in the face of repression.
Freedom of speech is not a privilege but a fundamental right. The Turkish government’s aggressive online censorship must not go unchallenged. Global intervention is urgently needed to safeguard press freedom and prevent further erosion of digital rights in Turkey.
